Questions & Answers

What's the difference between a singing "teacher" and a song "coach" ?
A singing teacher "teaches" people to sing, even those who can't. A song coach helps those who already have a natural singing talent to sing better and be artistic. He helps amateurs to become professionals and professionals to become stars.

Can anybody come and train with you or do you have to be professional ?
I try to help everyone who has enough "musicality" - meaning they don't sing false. Most newcomers are amateurs who have sung in school, or in choirs. Some have sung with a local band, some have taken part in talent contests and some have just sung in the bathroom.  I also help some professionals who've been singing with cover bands and who want to step up to being creative solo artists. Once in a while, I help some "celebrity" put the finishing touches to his next recording project before he goes into the studio.

Do you ever teach outside Europe - in the USA for example ?
I've been invited to be a "guest" teacher at the famous Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, and I hope to be able to make the trip next year.

Where are you located and how do I get there ?
My little studio is in the swedish forest just outside the city of Gothenburg. (See
www.johnkincade.com/stageschool.html)
It's 30 minutes from the city centre and about the same from the airport. Because coaching sessions are every 2 or every 4 weeks, commuting is no problem. Many of my singers are from the West of Sweden, and if they don't have their own cars, I pick them up from the local station. Some singers travel quite a way to train here with me - for example from Stockholm and Oslo.

Is it individual coaching or in classes ?
I only do individual coaching because the aim is to help singers become solo artists with their own personal style and sound.

How does it work ?
We have a series of coaching sessions, in which :
(a) we record 2 or 3 new songs everytime, building up your routine (see
www.johnkincade.com/repertoire.html)
(b) we develop your voice with regard to range and sound
(c) we develop your technique - vibrato, tails etc.
(d) I gradually teach you new methods to "interpret" songs in a personal way (by re-building the phrasing, without changing the melody or lyrics) so that you can communicate with your own individual style
(e) I teach you methods by which you can put the whole thing together in a "performance" in which everything not only sounds good, but is also believable. This is the only way to create "goose-bumps" for the listener.
(f)  we slowly build up a repertoire of song performances, which are then re-recorded onto a CD as your "showcase"  in the hunt for singing jobs or record contracts.

How much does it cost and what does that include ?
Both the "Fast Lane" and the "Normal Speed" are 10 month seasons, the "Fast Lane" being for the really ambitious ones, with regular 2.5 hour recording sessions every two weeks, whilst the "Normal Speed" is for those who want to work towards the same results, but at a slightly slower pace with sessions every four weeks. The time in between is spent learning new songs, rehearsing and trying out the new ideas I give you. Both the "Fast Lane" and the "Normal Speed" include coaching and teaching, help with your own songs, all studio time, all song material, your "Showcase" CD, and any other help I can give you, either with advice or contacts.
The "Fast Lane" costs a total of 15,000 Swedish Kronor (ca.$1,500)with payments spread out over 8 months - 5 x 3,000.
The "Normal Speed" costs a total of 8,000 Swedish Kronor (ca.$800) with payments spread out over 8 months - 5 x 1,600.

Do you do "quick fixes" or must I book the whole "season" ?
A "season" (or two) is the best, because then I have the time to give you the tools to build a career. But if you have a tour or something coming up, or if you want to "polish up" some songs before a show, then of course I'll try to help. Also, if you want to get some songs "right" before going into the recording studio.

How many singers do you have training with you ?
10 "Fast Lane" singers and about 40 "Normal Speed" singers

What about singer/songwriters ?
A singer who writes his or her own songs is always interesting for the music business, so of course I'll encourage and help you with your songwriting, and we can record your songs instead of covers.

Do you coach "classical" singing ?
No.
What do you mean by "individual" style ?
Every person's voice is unique - there isn't another like it anywhere on the planet. Also, everyone's way of communicating  - their way of tellinmg a story and  letting people know what they think and feel - is totally personal. If we combine these two things :
a unique sounding voice and a personal way of communicating with a special way of singing songs - we create an individual style, which makes you special in the world of pop music.

Is it possible to come and do a "try-out" ?
Yes, of course, and it won't cost you anything. Just e-mail me and I'll try and fix a time for you. Alternatively, you can wait until August when I'll be doing my annual "song-week" in Gothenburg.
(see
www.johnkincade.com/songweek.html)

Does your song-coaching work ?
Yes. Among the singers I've coached, there are now more than 70 who are professionals, with many more working in semi-professional bands. More than 25 landed recording contracts after training with me and 6 have become big stars.

www.johnkincade.com/stageschoolsingers.html)

Do you have any samples to listen to ?
Yes - go to
www.johnkincade.com/soundfiles.html and download as many as you like. They take a while to download, but they are well worth the wait.
